Wyomissing family earns top prize in 'Christmas Light Fight'

When it comes to decorating a home for Christmas, few across the country can do it as well as the Macrina family of Berks County.
Tim and Katie Macrina and their children, Derek and Molly, were awarded the top prize in an episode of "The Great Christmas Light Fight," which aired Monday night on ABC-TV.
"It feels great," said Tim. "I was never an athlete in school, so this trophy means a lot."
"Nerdiness pays off," added Katie.
The family used more than 60,000 twinkling lights, all synchronized to music, to decorate their new home on Lincoln Court in Wyomissing.
The Macrinas' work was more than enough to impress the judges and beat out three other families for "The Great Christmas Light Fight" trophy and $50,000.
"I thought the way they utilized the lights with the music -- the synchronization -- perfect job," said Michael Moloney, one of the contest's two judges. "There's a subtlety to this that works. It allows you to see each detail, and there's creativity everywhere. I love it!"
"This display was extraordinary because they didn't need to distract you with the blow molds and the inflatables and all these other things. It was purely about lights and I was purely impressed," said the other judge, Sabrina Soto. "This is how I would decorate my house."
69 News first introduced its viewers to the Macrinas in 2006, the first year of their Christmas light display at their old home on Sunset Road in neighboring West Reading.
More lights were added the following year, and again the next year, and the display has been getting bigger ever since.
"The old house, I was there for six years. Here, a lot more space to fill up," said Tim Macrina.
The "Christmas on Lincoln" light show runs daily between 5:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., weather-permitting.
