Winter weather diminishes blood supply in Lehigh Valley

The current run of bitterly cold temperatures and snow is impacting the area's blood supply.

According to Sean Tinney, director of marketing for Miller-Keystone Blood Center, the winter weather has hampered collection from donors.

"The blood inventory is less than 50% of where we need it to be. A couple of serious traumas could further reduce our inventory to critical levels," Tinney said.

On Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, the weather forced the centers to close early and officials had to cancel blood drives because of the winter storm.

In addition to the snow, the frigid temperatures have kept donors from coming out to the centers and blood drives.

"We will actually need a couple of weeks of strong collection numbers to reach our ideal inventory levels," Tinney added.

Miller-Keystone is urging donors to come to the centers to help replenish supplies.
