William Allen High School welcomes former teacher as principal

Luke Shafnisky knows the halls of William Allen High School in Allentown very well.
"I started as a science teacher at this very same school," said Shafnisky.
Now, he runs the place.
After 10 years at Allen, a stint at Dieruff and then going through the Allentown Principal Leadership Initiative at Lehigh University, he's back as Allen's sixth principal in three years.
"I am meeting with students, with faculty, to pick up those ideas. What are the great ideas that really worked in the past couple of years and what are a few of the things that worked in the past that kind of slipped away that we can revive," said Shafnisky.
Shafnisky said he plans to stay put and make a career at Allen. His main focus is engaging every student and bringing out their own unique talents, whether it's by more student centered instruction or through community connections with business and industry.
"They're confronting problems all the time and seeking solutions. If we can find ways to either model that process with our students and have them participate then they can really see the meaningful impact of their education," said Shafnisky.
Shafnisky said his renewed emphasis on relationships will be key in helping Allen's students and staff members meet personal and educational challenges.
He says it's not going to be easy, like tackling the first year of school uniforms but meeting those challenges are part of why he came back.
"This place has so many amazing things going on," said Shafnisky.
