Wet road leads to fatal crash in Bern, police say

The heavy rain pounded the region all day Thursday. The wet conditions are being blamed for several crashes in Berks County, including one that claimed a young woman's life.
Rescue crews rushed to the scene of a crash Thursday morning on County Welfare Road in Bern Township.
"The sole occupant of the vehicle was deceased. So it is a fatal investigation right now," said Bern Township Police Sergeant Brian Strand.
The Berks County Coroner says the victim is Angela Bross, 21, of Sinking Spring.
Investigators say around 9 a.m., Bross was heading west when she lost control of her car. It rolled onto its side and then hit a tree. Investigators ruled the crash an accident and say weather may have been the cause.
"Best thing to say is when the weather changes and the adverse conditions are getting to this is to just slow down and be careful," said Strand.
But this was not the only accident in Bern Township. There were two others. One was on Old Bernville Road and the other near West Leesport and County Welfare Roads. Luckily both drivers survived.
Then as the rain persisted, the roads conditions continued getting worse causing this vehicle to flip upside down and land about 30 feet into a corn field on Route 422 near Limekiln Road in Amity Township.
"Every time it rains real hard there is a big hydroplane at the bottom of the hill and they hydroplaned on the next property and skid all the way to my hillside and come up in my yard," said Birdsboro resident Tom Rauchfuss.
The woman managed to get out of the wreckage on her own. She was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
In addition to these accident, the westbound side of 1-78 in Greenwich Township was shut down for a short period of time after a tractor-trailer jack-knifed. Police just want to remind drivers to slow down and use extra caution when driving in these wet conditions.
