The coroner has identified a man who was killed in a four-car accident that closed a stretch of Route 22 West in Lehigh County for several hours Friday morning, police said.
The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. near the Fullerton Avenue interchange in Whitehall Township.
A car going at a high rate of speed hit the back of a vehicle, which was slowing down for an active construction zone near Route 145, said state police, who noted that the impact pushed the second vehicle into two other vehicles.
The second car overturned, and one of its occupants, identified as William H. Wilson, was ejected. Wilson, 24, of Stewartsville, Warren Co., N.J., died at the scene, the coroner said.
The driver of the car that started the chain reaction accident was taken to Lehgih Valley Hospital with serious injuries, police said.
A second occupant of the second car was also taken to the same hospital in critical condition, along with the occupants of the third vehicle, who sustained minor injuries, police said.
Both westbound lanes of Route 22 were blocked for several hours between Fullerton Avenue and Route 145 as state police investigated the accident.
