RARITAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. -

Officials in Hunterdon County, N.J., have arrested a man they say abused a child he was caring for during Hurricane Sandy.

Prosecutor Anthony Kearns said Augusto Diaz, 75, of Flemington was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and aggravated criminal sexual contact resulting from an incident that happened inside his home November 1.

Kearns said Diaz engaged in sexual contact with a child under the age of 13 who was in his care after being displaced from his home because of the storm.

"The guardians of children must always be alert to the fact that those who sexually exploit children can be a trusted friend or family member.  Communication with children under your care is imperative in keeping them safe," Kearns said.

Diaz was arraigned and is being lodged in the Hunterdon County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
