A 16-year-old boy is facing a witness tampering charge after allegedly assaulting another teen who was a witness to a crime, according to authorities in Warren County, New Jersey.

Mansfield Township police said the boy was charged July 6 following an investigation that revealed he assaulted a 15-year-old boy at a bus stop back on June 17. The victim suffered head and leg injuries, police said.

The victim was targeted because he was a witness to another crime the 16-year-old had been charged with, according to police.

On July 6, the 16-year-oldĀ  was charged with witness tampering and simple assault. He was released to his parents pending an appearance in the Family Division of the Warren County Superior Court.
