Weis Markets' 2012 Fight Hunger campaign has resulted in a $25,000 donation to the Greater Berks Food Bank.

SPRING TWP., Pa. -

Weis Markets' 2012 Fight Hunger campaign has resulted in a $25,000 donation to the Greater Berks Food Bank.

Fight Hunger is an annual program that takes place during Hunger Action Month.

“Each September, we ask our customers to consider donating to local food banks in all of the markets we serve," said Kurt Schertle, executive vice president, sales and merchandising for Weis Markets. "We supplement their generosity throughout the year with corporate donations to our regional food bank partners."

"Weis Markets' donation will help us supply a weekend backpack program that will help us feed more than 1,000 children a week during the school year," said Doug Long, manager of marketing and development for Greater Berks Food Bank. "We are grateful for Weis Markets' continued support and look forward to working with them on the Fight Hunger campaign again this September."

Weis Markets' donations in recent years have added up to more than $70,000 and generated thousands more in customer donations, said Long, noting that the company has also provided discounted food purchases to the food bank.

Weis Markets’ Fight Hunger campaign offers customers the opportunity to donate to local food banks and emergency food providers. In addition to food donations, customers can also add $3, $5 and $10 vouchers to their overall purchases during checkout, with all proceeds being given to area food banks in the form of gift card donations to help fill gaps in food supplies.

The Greater Berks Food Bank collects, stores and distributes food to more than 280 charitable agencies in Berks, Schuylkill and western Montgomery counties.
