Freezing rain led to treacherous travel and a number of accidents during the Wednesday morning commute.
Temperatures were hovering right at the freezing point of 32 degrees as the rain fell and froze, primarily on untreated surfaces.
PennDOT officials said crews were out trying to treat the roads. Spokesman Ron Young said freezing rain is very difficult to manage because it refreezes if it's cold enough.
Multiple accidents closed Interstate 81 between exits 89 and 104 in Schuylkill County.
Other accidents were reported in Upper Macungie Township, Lower Macungie Township, Lynn Township, South Whitehall Township, and Salisbury Township, all in Lehigh County.
In Berks County, state police were investigating multiple crashes resulting from icy conditions. BARTA bus service was suspended for about 90 minutes before resuming around 10:30 a.m., and the Reading Regional Airport was briefly closed as crews worked to deice the runways.
In Northampton County, several accidents were reported on Route 22.
