TOPTON, Pa. -

Veterans Day services lasted all day at Brandywine Heights Middle School in Topton as students and service members united for an annual event.

"I just love this day," said eighth grader Autumn Bieber. "I love how we honor them."

For 14 years, the school has opened its doors to current and past service members on Veterans Day, inviting dozens to an assembly and luncheon. Many guests this year, including Master Sgt. John Paul Karpovich, spent time speaking in classrooms.

"Not every school has a Veterans Day program… so first of all I wanted to thank them for that," said Karpovich, whose nephew is a student at the school.

Karpovich told 69 News he was touched by the school's effort to welcome the veterans and service members. He enjoyed seeing patriotic posters, made by the students, adorning the hallways.

"It just warms your heart to know that the children are actually thinking about us, who wear the uniform everyday," said Karpovich.

"They're very encouraging to me, as a soldier," said Sgt. Ryan Cannon, who was invited by his stepbrother, a fifth grader at the school.

"It's encouraging to be somebody's role model," said Cannon. "It's nice to have a school that supports a lot of this."

For students, the day is just as special.

"It really means a lot to me because they were fighting for us," said Bieber.
