Route 222, Wyomissing accident

Andrew Valentino/69 News

WYOMISSING, Pa. -

Two of three vehicles carrying high school football players to a practice session were involved in an accident with a tractor trailer on Thursday.

The crash happened shortly after 9 a.m. on the Route 222 North flyover ramp, adjacent to the Inn at Reading, in Wyomissing.

The three vehicles were traveling together from Governor Mifflin High School in Shillington to Schuylkill Valley High School in Ontelaunee Township when police said the driver of the third vehicle -- an SUV -- failed to realize the two vehicles he was following were taking the ramp and swerved in front of a tractor trailer to stay with them.

The SUV made contact with the truck, causing the SUV to spin out of control and roll onto its roof, police said.

The SUV's driver was transported to Reading Hospital for treatment of lacerations to one of his legs, police said. No one else was injured.

The tractor trailer and one of the other two vehicles carrying the football players sustained minor damage in the accident.

No citations have been issued, police said.

The students were set to take part in a volunteer practice session, according to a spokeswoman for the Governor Mifflin School District.
