Upper Bern Twp man charged in bank robbery

Police say Shane Sprenger, 21, of Upper Bern Township robbed the Vist Bank in Bern Township on Monday.

Police have charged one of the four people taken into custody near a school in Reading on Monday.

Shane Sprenger, 21, of Upper Bern Township was charged in connection with a bank robbery that happened at the Vist Bank in Bern Township around 1pm Monday.

Sprenger and three other people were stopped shortly after the robbery by police on Schuylkill Avenue near Lackawanna Street in Reading.  Children were being dismissed from the nearby Glenside Elemtary school during the dramatic apprehension.

Bern Township police chief Wesley Waugh praised the cooperation of local law enforcement during the incident.

Police say the vehicle Sprenger was in stopped outside the bank on West Leesport Road around 1pm on Tuesday.  They say Sprenger went into the bank and wrote  a note demanding money.  In the note, Sprenger threatened to shoot the teller and everyone inside the bank but no weapon was displayed, according to police.

Sprenger left the bank with an undisclosed amount of money, and police say he re-entered the vehicle and the car headed south on Route 183. 

A Bern Township police officer responded to the bank and broadcast a description of the vehicle.  The vehicle was stopped a few miles away near Lackawanna Street in Reading.  Four people were taken into custody.  Sprenger was charged with robbery, theft, terroristic threats, and related charges.  The other three people in the car were released after questioning.
