Turnpike temporarily closes service plaza in Chester County
Turnpike officials have temporarily closed a service plaza in Chester County due to mold.
The Peter J. Camiel Service Plaza, located at mile marker 305 for westbound traffic in Elverson, was closed Monday morning after workers found what appears to be a type of mold after discovering leaks in the roof.
Even though food is not available at the restaurants, the Sunoco gas station remains open to sell fuel, along with snacks and drinks at the Sunoco convenience store, which is in a different building.
Alternate arrangements have been made for restroom facilities, and temporary portable restrooms will be on site later Monday.
In the next few days, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commissioners will have a better idea of when the service plaza will reopen.
In the meantime, travelers can use the next on-pike facility--the Lawn Service Plaza at mile marker 259, about 46 miles west.
Travelers can also find facilities off the Turnpike at the Morgantown interchange (exit 298), which is just seven miles from the closed service plaza.
The Camiel Plaza was scheduled for reconstruction starting in October and was expected to remain open during the remodeling.
It's unknown if that schedule will be impacted by the mold discovery.
Travelers can plan ahead before traveling by calling the Turnpike Roadway information line at 866-976 TRIP (8747) for real-time traffic alerts.
