Turnpike bridge work begins soon in Carbon County
Work to replace two Pennsylvania Turnpike bridges in Carbon County will begin next week.
The project will be in Franklin Township, between the the Mahoning Valley and Pocono interchanges of the turnpike's Northeast Extension.
The bridges are a quarter-mile north of the Mahoning Valley Interchange (Exit #74).
One carries the turnpike over Route 209 and Pohopoco Creek, the other crosses Pohopoco Drive.
The structures will be replaced in stages to maintain turnpike traffic. Drivers should be prepared for nighttime restrictions and reduced work-zone speed limits.
A$22.1 million contract was awarded to New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc. of New Enterprise to replace two bridges.
The contractor is installing warning signs, traffic-control devices and temporary concrete barriers to establish a work zone between mileposts A74 and A78.
In the coming weeks, crews will begin removing existing median barriers, milling and paving the shoulder and median, and installing pavement markings in preparation for a traffic shift.
In November, the contractor will install advanced-warning signs and traffic-control devices on Route 209 and Pohopoco Drive.
Replacing the bridge over Pohopoco Drive will require closing that road and detouring traffic
The detour will follow Harrity Road to Fairyland Road to Grange Road back to Pohopoco Drive. Local access on Pohopoco Drive will be available in both directions to the bridge while the detour is in place.
Travel advisories will be posted online and on Highway Advisory Radio (1640 AM). In case of an emergency, drivers can utilize available yellow call boxes on the shoulder or dial *11 to receive aid.
Travelers can get turnpike traffic alerts by calling 866-976-TRIP (8747) or visiting the live Travel Conditions Map online .
