Replacement of the Union Street Bridge over Cedar Creek in the City of Allentown will begin on Monday, March 18, 2013.  This will result in the closing of the bridge until the project is completed.  Message boards announcing the closing are scheduled to be activated soon.

The Union Street Bridge was built in 1930.  The existing bridge is a two span concrete structure with an adjacent cantilevered concrete sidewalk.  The new bridge will likewise be a concrete bridge but with a single span and a wider hydraulic opening.  The new bridge will be longer and have a 36 feet wide roadway and will include sidewalks on both sides of the bridge.

Detour signs will be posted for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.  The vehicular traffic detour will be via S. 24th Street, SR 222/Hamilton Street, and S. 17th Street.  The pedestrian detour will be via S. St. Elmo Street, Walnut Street, and S. 17th Street.  A six feet wide pedestrian walkway will be established along the west side of S. St. Elmo Street by placing protective barriers along the roadway from Union Street to Hickory Street.

J.D. Eckman Inc. of Atglen, Pennsylvania is the general contractor for the $3.3 million project.  Funding for the project is 80% Federal, 15% State, and 5% City.  The current anticipated completion date is December 2014.
