Tractor trailer fire closes Route 222 South near Pennsylvania Turnpike's Reading interchange

Six Mercedes Benzes were destroyed when a car carrier caught fire on Route 222 in East Cocalico Township, Lancaster County.

EAST COCALICO TWP., Pa. -

A tractor trailer fire closed a stretch of Route 222 South between Berks and Lancaster counties for several hours Wednesday morning.

The car carrier erupted in flames near the Reading interchange of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in East Cocalico Twp., Lancaster Co., shortly after 5 a.m.

Police closed 222 South between the turnpike and the Route 568 interchange in Brecknock Twp., Berks Co., while firefighters from both Berks and Lancaster counties battled the flames.

No one was injured.

The southbound lanes of 222 were closed for nearly five hours.

The truck trailer and six Mercedes Benz vehicles it was hauling were destroyed by the fire.
