A Berks County family is dealing with heartbreak on Memorial Day.
A 20-month-old little boy died Monday after he plunged into a swimming pool during a cookout Sunday afternoon, said police.
"He's a beautiful child, liked to play. He don't like to cry, he liked to play," said Jagdeo Budhu, the toddler's grandfather.
Flashing lights and police cruisers were parked outside in the 3000 block of Regency Drive in Spring Township, where the toddler was found at the bottom of the swimming pool, said police.
"There was a lot of commotion, a lot of screaming. At one point the neighbors were also having a gathering, they ran over and luckily for them a nurse was in the crowd," said Ofc. Josh Knoblauch, Spring Twp. Police Department.
The little boy was pulled out of the water and the nurse immediately started chest compressions.
"I relieved her at that point. Once the AED was hooked up I got no response from the AED, so I continued chest compressions I would say roughly 2-3 minutes prior to EMS getting there," said Knoblauch.
Andrew was rushed to Reading Hospital, and later flown to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).
According to police, Andrew was getting changed with a family member, and next thing they know he went missing. Now, investigators are trying to piece together the five-minute window before his mother found him under water.
"The pool was fenced in, but there's a crowd gathered there and you have that many eyes, but you just have to watch them constantly."
