Thief threw safe out second-story window while robbing Bushkill Township home
A man robbed the home of his girlfriend's brother of more than $4,000 in coins and jewelry and heaved a safe with valuables in it out of a second-story window.
Sean P. Sterner is charged with breaking into the home in the 400 block of East Moorestown Road, Bushkill Township, Northampton County, between 8 and 11 p.m. May 31 by placing a 2-by-4 against one of the walls and popping a screen on a kitchen window.
Sterner took a plastic cup with $20 in change from the kitchen and $50 in change, $100 in silver certificates and $20 in baseball cards from two children's bedrooms, officials said.
In the master bedroom, they said, he took $30 in gold coins, two wine jugs worth $75 and a $150 Sentry safe containing a $1,531 engagement ring, a $1,500 wedding band and $400 in cash.
The homeowner found some coins scattered in his back yard and a damaged safe in the garage with the valuables missing. Police determined the safe had been thrown into the yard from the second floor.
Sterner used the homeowner's sledgehammer and crowbar to remove the safe's door, according to officials.
Sterner, who had been dating the homeowner's sister for three months and had been in the home before it was robbed, was found walking on Roosevelt Street in Pen Argyl, Northampton County at about 1:30 p.m. June 1 by an off-duty Wind Gap police officer.
That same day, the woman who was dating Sterner told a bar maid at the Pen Argyl Republican Club that she found a ring with her nephew's name engraved on it on her living room floor, officials said, noting that the woman later turned over the ring to police.
Sterner, 46, of 413 West Pennsylvania Ave., Pen Argyl, was arraigned Monday night on charges of burglary, criminal trespass, theft, receiving stolen property and criminal mischief and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $25,000 bail, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. June 19.
