A family has been displaced after a pickup truck slammed into their home in rural Washington Township, Berks County, shortly after midnight Saturday morning.
"The house moved... like an earthquake," said Tracy Roberts, who was inside with husband, Rick, and their 12-year-old daughter at the time. The couple is each hearing impaired, but they still felt the crash.
"Everything fell on the floor," said Roberts.
The impact was so severe that it knocked the Hillcrest Road home off its foundation, causing cracks around the entire exterior. The chimney also collapsed onto the garage and shed.
"Everything seemed to be twisted. It did damage on all sides of the home," said Chief Michael Mutter, Eastern Berks Fire Dept.
When crews arrived on the scene, the truck was still lodged in the home's living room corner. Mutter told 69 News that the electric meter box in the basement was also struck, and Met-Ed crews were called to the scene.
"The front of the truck was impacted… like it hit a telephone pole," said Michael Miller, a family relative. "It had to be going over 50 miles an hour."
Fortunately, the Roberts were able to exit the home safely with their two pets. They are currently staying with family nearby.
Officials said the driver was also uninjured and taken from the scene by Pennsylvania State Police troopers.
On Monday, a PSP spokesman could not confirm whether that driver is facing charges in the crash.
