Police in Bethlehem Township say they have broken up a massive car burglary spree involving three male juveniles.
Police say the three male teens, one age 17 and two age 16, were taken into custody early Wednesday morning.
Police say the three were arrested at the Giant supermarket on Easton Avenue around 6:10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11 after being seen putting the proceeds of their thefts into a Coinstar machine. One kid resides in the City of Bethlehem and the other two live in Freemansburg.
Bethlehem Township police say one of kids claims the trio stole money and other items out of 30 cars early Wednesday morning. Ten of the car burglaries were reported in Bethlehem Township in the area of Hecktown Road and Easton Avenue.
Bethlehem Township police say other car burglaries occurred in neighboring municipalities, including the City of Bethlehem.
Police said one of the kids actually burglarized a home by getting a remote out of an unlocked car, opening the garage door, and stealing a purse out of the car inside.
Bethlehem Township police say there was no damage. All the cars were unlocked.
Police say mostly money was taken. Some of the cars had larger amounts of money in them. One car had a total of $370 stolen.
Bethlehem Township police Sgt. Daryl LaPointe praised the security staff at Giant for being so observant. He said the same kids were seen there previously at odd hours.
When they were seen there again early Wednesday, the staff immediately called police.
LaPointe said the kids were arrested before they got out of the store.
LaPointe said the staff at Giant "really had their antennas up."
