'Tastykakes for Troops' campaign for wounded soldiers underway
A Northampton County woman has a sweet idea to help thousands of wounded soldiers who are on the road to recovery.
It involves a freezer full of Tastykakes, brought and stored at Pop's Kitchen in Easton by employees of Team Capital Bank for Kaitlin Reinbold, of Bethlehem, on behalf of wounded soldiers.
"To me, it's personal because my husband is a Marine," she said.
The story started three years ago when Kaitlin's husband was in Afghanistan.
"I was sending weekly care packages to my husband," she recalled.
Inside were boxes of Tastykakes.
"Husband told me they were a hit with his troop," she said.
Especially with Marshall Kennedy, a sergeant from Arkansas, who had never had one.
"Said almost ate the entire box in one day," Kaitlin said.
An IED cost Kennedy both his legs. He was sent to Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., and the Marshall Plan was born.
"Every year, it's overwhelming. Get more and more boxes of Tastykakes," Bob Price said.
Price, of Team Capital Bank, is a family friend of Kaitlin and organized donations of Tastykakes at different branch sites in the Lehigh Valley..
Next week, the collections of the treats, as well as monetary donations used for gift cards for soldiers, will be sent to Walter Reed Medical Center and handed out to wounded warriors like Adam Keys.
"It shows people are still thinking about us and haven't forgot, which always means a lot, said Keys, of Whitehall Twp., Lehigh Co.
Keys has been rehabbing at Walter Reed for the past three years.
"I'm from Pennsylvania, so I'm familiar with Tastykakes, and it's always good to have them again," Keys said.
Donations will be taken at Team Capital Banks until Friday.
