Police have launched an investigation of an accident involving an SUV that slammed into a medical office building in Berks County.
The driver, 28, of Reading, did not suffer any serious injuries. Now, investigators said they are working to determine if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
The 1998 Ford Expedition was sent on a collision course before it slammed head-on into the wall of the office building attached to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Bern Township.
"When we responded. we found a vehicle against the wall and the tires were still spinning as if the accelerator was pushed to the floor," said Dan Billings, director of security at the hospital.
The tires of the SUV were left destroyed after running in gear at full throttle, and the burned rubber melted into the sidewalk.
Inside the St. Joseph Women Services office, cabinets and shelves were thrown to the ground, bottles were knocked over and papers littered the floor.
"The driver was taken to the emergency department and the police are investigating the cause of the crash," said Billings.
The crash happened just before 10:30 p.m. Sunday when the SUV veered off Route 183.
Tire marks in the grass showed the path of the SUV, which hopped the curb, climbed up a steep hill and narrowly missed trees before it slammed into the building.
The building did not suffer structural damage. Luckily, the accident happened after-hours when nobody was in the office.
At this point, the driver, whose name has not been released, has not been charged. Police said they are checking into a number of things, including if alcohol played a role in the crash.
