Summer is officially over for students and teachers in the Allentown School District.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -

Summer is officially over for students and teachers in the Allentown School District.

The district's superintendent, Russell Mayo, greeted students as they began the year at Ritter Elementary School on Tuesday.

Mayo said he is trying to visit each of the 22 schools in the district during this first week.

"I'm trying to check, make sure everybody has what he or she needs as far as principals, and make sure the kids are settled in," Mayo said. "I'm very impressed, so far, with my visits to several schools this morning."

Mayo said the district is also keeping an eye on class sizes in wake of recent teacher cuts.
