BETHLEHEM TWP., Pa. -

A man involved in a car crash in Lehigh County four months ago stole the vehicle from a bed-ridden friend, officials said.

Steven J. Brad took a white 2005 Volkswagen Golf belonging to Sally Murphy, 2005 5th St., Bethlehem Twp., Northampton Co., between March 23 and March 24, and then hit a tree with it in Slatington, Lehigh Co., on March 24, officials said.

Murphy reported to police that she noticed her car was missing on March 25 when she was leaving for work and that she last saw her car two days earlier when Brad, who was a guest in her home, drove her to the store because she was taking medication for an illness, officials said.

Murphy told police she was in bed feeling ill for most of the weekend of March 23, officials added.

Brad, 33, of 409 W. South St., Slatington, was arraigned Tuesday afternoon on charges of theft, receiving stolen property and unauthorized use of a vehicle and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $50,000 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. July 23.
