Texans trade QB Yates to Falcons for LB Dent

One day after announcing that Ryan Fitzpatrick would be their starting quarterback, the Houston Texans dealt away part of their surplus at the position.
Houston traded quarterback T.J. Yates to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for linebacker Akeem Dent, the Falcons announced on their Twitter page Wednesday night.
Media reports that the Texans released Yates on Wednesday were incorrect.
The Texans still have Case Keenum and Tom Savage to back up Fitzpatrick.
In Atlanta, Yates figures to compete with Dominique Davis, Sean Renfree and rookie free agent signee Jeff Mathews for the right to back up Matt Ryan.
Yates guided the Texans to their first playoff victory in 2011 after replacing an injured Matt Schaub. Yates was unable to capitalize on Schaub's 2013 fall, however, with the Texans turning to Keenum in a failed attempt to save their season.
Fitzpatrick, formerly of the Buffalo Bills and Tennessee Titans, signed with the Texans in March.
Yates, 27, was a fifth-round pick in the 2011 draft. He started five games during his rookie season but played in just seven combined contests the past two years. Yates completed 60.8 percent of his passes for 1,100 yards, three touchdowns and six interceptions.
Dent, 26, spent three seasons in Atlanta after the Falcons drafted him in the third round in 2011. He played 47 of a possible 48 regular-season games for the Falcons, making 20 starts, including seven last year.
He recorded 26 tackles, 1.5 sacks and one pass defensed in 2013.
