Eagles release veteran WR Jason Avant

Veteran wide receiver Jason Avant has been released by the Eagles after eight seasons.

PHILADELPHIA -

When the Eagles re-signed wideouts Riley Cooper and Jeremy Maclin, someone had to go in order to make room. That someone is eight year veteran Jason Avant, who was released by the Birds Tuesday.

Avant had been the third longest tenured player on the team.

His value to the Eagles extended beyond his reliable hands in the slot. Avant was considered a team leader and a role model both inside and outside of the locker room.

Avant's numbers took a hit last year in Chip Kelly's new offense, a system where he was required to block more.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said "releasing a player like Jason is one of the toughest parts of the job."
