Schuylkill Valley tops Brandywine Heights on the mats

Schuylkill Valley was able to score enough early to survive a late surge from the Bullets and pick up a 40-28 victory Wednesday night.

MERTZTOWN, Pa. -

It seems every year either Brandywine Heights or Schuylkilll Valley is one of the top contenders for the Berks wrestling championship.  Some years, both are.  They are perennially good programs and when they meet it's almost always a tight dual.

Wednesday night was that night this season as the Panthers and Bullets got together in Mertztown on Brandywine's senior night.

Schuylkill Valley dominated the early bouts, winning 7 of the first 9 to lead 37-9.

Brandywine made a late push, capturing 4 of the final 5 bouts. But it was too little too late as Schuylkill Valley held on to win 40-28.

The Panthers got pins from Josh Giorgio, Elijah Zimmerman and Jonah Horst.

Brandywine saw pins by Daniel Schmeck and Cole Swackhamer.

Top seniors Peter Renda and Adam Mackie got wins on senior night for Brandywine. Renda's came via forfeit.
