There are big basketball games almost every night in Berks County because of the depth of the league.
Tuesday night it just so happens there were more than usual.
Big games all over the place, and perhaps the most intriguing was the game in Reiffton between the Eagles and Reading, a show me game for both teams. Exeter came into the game a perfect 14-0. Reading High was only 7-7, but the Red Knights have played a grueling schedule.
That schedule paid off for Reading. The Red Knights built an 18-point halftime lead and would survive a second-half rally from the Eagles to claim a 61-48 victory to hand the Eagles their first loss of the season. The win also vaults Reading into sole possession of first place in Berks I.
Reading's Jalan Branford had a monster game, tallying 22 points and 12 rebounds. he got help from Isael Abreu and Gilberto Benz, who both recorded 11 points.
Brett Gilbert and Derek Stump were scored 11 for the Eagles. The normally potent Justin Trojanowski was held to just 5 points.
These two teams won't meet again until the final game of the regular season on February 5th at the Geigle Complex.
Back in Reading, Berks Catholic took over the top spot in Berks II with a 70-47 win over Conrad Weiser. Both teams were undefeated in league play coming in.
The Saints had three scorers in double-digits. Connor Jack led everyone with 21 ponts, Nana Foulland added 18 while Mike Miller dropped 11.
Eddie Brinson paced the Scouts with 14 points. Dexter Jordan poured in 11.
Berks Catholic will host Schuylkill Valley Thursday night. Conrad Weiser will visit Twin Valley Friday.
In Mertztown, the Oley Valley boys recovered after trailing at half to defeat Brandywine Heights 42-37. Oley Valley advances to 4-1 in Berks III and a first place tie with Wyomissing.
Jay Kerkeslager led all scorers with 19 points to pace the way for Oley Valley. Bryce Pinkerton and Sean Ziegler added 7 point each to lead Brandywine Heights.
Oley Valley hosts Wyomissing on Friday night in a Berks III showdown and Brandywine Heights travels to Kutztown on Thursday looking to end a three game losing streak.
