The Pittsburgh Penguins announced the firing of coach Dan Bylsma on Friday, the same day it named Jim Rutherford as general manager.
The Penguins fired general manager Ray Shero after being eliminated from the playoffs, deciding to hold on to Bylsma and leave it up to the new GM to decide on the coach's future.
Rutherford decided to part with Bylsma.
The Penguins won the Stanley Cup in 2009 after Bylsma took over as coach midway through the season. Under Bylsma, the Penguins went 252-117-32 in the regular season. Bylsma also won the Jack Adams Award as NHL coach of the year in 2011.
Pittsburgh advanced to the Eastern Conference finals last season, but were ousted in the second round by the New York Rangers this year.
Earlier, Rutherford was officially named the team's new general manager.
Rutherford, the Carolina Hurricanes' former GM, left his advisory/president role with the team to take the Penguins' job.
Rutherford, 65, was the franchise's general manager for 20 seasons. The Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup in 2006. He recently took on his new role with the team after the regular season when Ron Francis was promoted to general manager.
Rutherford was the longest-tenured general manager in the NHL. The franchise has a regular-season record of 570-521-167-20 since moving to Carolina from Hartford (the former Whalers) in 1997.
Other candidates for the Penguins' job included the team's assistant general manager Jason Botterill, Tampa Bay Lightning assistant GM Julien BriseBois, Nashville Predators assistant GM Paul Fenton and NBC analyst Pierre McGuire.
The Penguins also contacted agent Pat Brisson for the job, but he decided to stay with agency CAA. Brisson represents several high-profile players including Sidney Crosby, Patrick Kane, Anze Kopitar, John Tavares and Jonathan Toews.
