The state wrestling tournament began Thursday morning in Hershey. Berks wrestlers took to the mats to begin their quest for state gold at the individual level.
It was the 2A grapplers who kicked things off at the Giant Center. Berks County had eight representatives in the 2A class, but it would be a tough opening round for most of them.
In fact, only two of the eight won their first round bouts. It was a pair of familiar faces, Brandywine Heights seniors Peter Renda and Adam Mackie.
Renda pinned Forest Hills' Zack Pinkas at 1:04 to give him a berth in the quarterfinals.
One mat over, fellow Bullet Adam Mackie scored a 14-9 decision over Penns Valley's Mike Rogers to earn himself a quarterfinal berth.
