Speed limits reduced on major highways
Updated On: Feb 05 2014 08:28:04 AM CST
Due to extreme weather conditions, PennDOT has reduced the speed limit on several major highways in our area, and part of the eastbound Turnpike is closed.
The Pa. Turnpike Commission and the Pa. State Police have implemented a reduced speed limit of 45 mph across the entire turnpike system.
In addition, there is a tractor trailer ban for all drivers pulling empty trailers and double trailers on the entire turnpike. Tractor trailer drivers are also restricted to the right lane between the Breezewood (#161) and New Stanton (#75) interchanges in both directions.
Also, due to an earlier fatal accident involving three tractor trailers near milepost 238 eastbound, the Pa. Turnpike is closed in both directions between Gettysburg Pike (#236) and Harrisburg West (#242) until the accident scene is clear and the State Police finish their investigation.
The accident happened around 11 p.m. Tuesday night and one driver was killed.

PennDOT also asks motorists to allow plenty of space when driving near plow trucks. Also, for their own safety and the safety of plow operators, motorists should never attempt to pass a truck while it is plowing or spreading winter materials.
PennDOT reminds motorists to pack an emergency kit for their vehicles.
A basic kit should include non-perishable food, water, blanket, small shovel and warm clothes. When preparing an emergency kit, motorists should take into account special needs of passengers such as baby food, pet supplies or medications and pack accordingly.
