Two men are in custody and a third is being sought in connection with a carjacking and kidnapping in Berks County.
The ordeal began Tuesday evening when a man and woman from Allentown and the woman's 17-month-old grandson were driving in the area of Kutztown and Mount Laurel roads in Muhlenberg Township, police said.
The man, who was driving, was approached by two acquaintances who asked him to give them a ride to a house on Mount Laurel Road, police said. The driver agreed.
As they were driving, one of the men, identified as Hugo Vega-Hernandez, put a gun to the driver's head, told him to keep driving and then ordered him to pull over, police said.
They got out of the vehicle and the second suspect, identified as Angel Vega-Hernandez, told Hugo to shoot the victim, police said.
Hugo put the gun against the victim's head and pulled the trigger, but the gun failed to fire, police said.
Hugo then ordered everyone to get back inside the car, with Hugo now behind the wheel, the female victim in the front passenger's seat and Angel, the male victim and the baby in the backseat, police said.
Hugo gave the gun to Angel, who pointed it at the baby and told the alleged victims not to do anything stupid, according to police.
Angel also informed the male victim that they were being followed by people with "AK's," said police, noting that the male victim observed a white Mitsubishi following them.
The male victim told police they drove for more than an hour before he noticed officers conducting a traffic stop in the Norristown area and jumped from the moving car, police said.
Hugo then stopped the car on the shoulder of the road and he, Angel and the female victim took off on foot, leaving the baby in the car, police said.
Officers recovered the baby unharmed and searched the area for the suspects, but they turned up nothing.
The driver of the Mitsubishi, identified as Francisco Pagan-Cruz, of Reading, was later apprehended by Norristown police.
Hugo Vega-Hernandez was taken into custody by Muhlenberg police after a brief foot chase near his home on Wednesday.
A warrant is out for the arrest of Angel Vega-Hernandez. Anyone with information about his whereabouts should contact the Muhlenberg Police Department at 610-929-5454 or Crime Alert Berks County at 877-373-9913.
The female victim contacted Allentown police Wednesday and told them she's safe.
