Residents are being warned of a phone scam where callers pose as agents with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, claim laws were broken and demand fines be paid.
The warning comes from Towamencin Township police, in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Agency.
Police report a woman received a call from someone claiming to be a drug enforcement agent investigating illegal online pharmaceutical purchases.
The caller informed the woman that she was being investigated for unlawful internet purchases and subject to prosecution. The caller then demanded that she submit a fine payment to avoid being arrested.
The unidentified woman asked several pertinent questions, determined the call was a scam and disconnected. She then notified police.
Law enforcement officials recommend that any communication, whether by phone or Internet, be verified by contacting the appropriate law enforcement agency via its published business phone number.
