Sewage plant in Bucks County to be converted to open space

Published On: Dec 07 2012 07:25:24 AM EST

A former sewer plant in Bristol Township is not going to waste, as Bucks County Commissioners approved demolishing the building for open space.

The former Falls Township Municipal Authority, located at Newportville and Ford roads in Bristol Township, was sold to Bucks County in 2002, but was destroyed by a fire in August 2011. The county is now putting $493,620 toward its demolition.

The county's general services reviewed the property and found several safety concerns that cause the past plant to be a liability issue for the township.

Geppert Brothers, Inc. will be the prime contractor on the project that will demolish the several large structures including two large holding tanks, a greenhouse and fencing.

The county is budgeting $316,000 is towards the general demolition, $147,000 for environmental remediation of the site, with a remaining contingency of $30,000 to fund unforeseen concerns such as additional asbestos.

After the facility is demolished and the proper environmental cleanup completed, the land will be left to naturalize, turning the former sewage plant into passive open space for Bucks County.
