50 car pileup on Pa Turnpike kills 1

Sunday's snowstorm turned deadly when a 35-year-old man was killed in a 50-car pileup on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

It happened about 12:30 p.m. Sunday between the Morgantown interchange and Route 82, not far from the Berks/Chester county line.

The westbound lanes of the turnpike between Morgantown and Downingtown were closed for more than seven hours Sunday afternoon into evening.

The damage to the vehicles was done by fender-benders or spin-out-type accidents, state police said.

One woman drove from Harrisburg to check on her mother, who was in the accident.

"She said she came around the corner and saw the cars were in the accident in front of her and swerved and I guess hit an embankment and went airborne up the hill onto an embankment," said Cindy Case, who added that her mother was not seriously injured.

Several tractor trailers and at least one boat were involved in the accident.

The man killed in the crash was identified by the Chester County coroner's office as Andrew Fisher, of Pittsburgh, who died of multiple injuries.
