Southbound turnpike tunnel closing Wednesday
As anyone who drove on the Pennsylvania Turnpike north of the Lehigh Valley interchange on Tuesday already may know, the southbound tube of the Lehigh Tunnel was closed for maintenance between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.
It will be closed again for maintenance from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, advises the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.
At 8 a.m. Wednesday, the southbound tunnel will be closed and all traffic will be diverted into the northbound tunnel until 2 p.m. There will be two-way, single-lane traffic in the northbound tunnel during those hours.
The Lehigh Tunnel is located at milepost A70-A71 between the Lehigh Valley (Exit #56) and Mahoning Valley (Exit #74) interchanges on the turnpike's Northeast extension. The tunnel is on the Lehigh/Carbon County boundary.
Message boards will be activated to update motorists of any changes in the schedule caused by inclement weather or unforeseen traffic conditions.
Motorists traveling on the turnpike are advised stay alert when approaching and entering the tunnel.
Drivers are urged to turn on headlights, slow down and keep an adequate distance from the vehicle ahead; remain in the lane and do not pass in the tunnel.
Anyone who experiences car trouble and cannot safely exit the tunnel should stay in the car, put on the hazard lights and wait for assistance. Tunnel personnel will monitor closed-circuit cameras and send help for disabled vehicles.
Travel advisories will be posted online and Highway Advisory Radio (1640 AM) will be activated to provide travel updates. Travelers can get Turnpike traffic alerts by calling 866-976-TRIP (8747) or visiting the live Travel Conditions Map online.
