Shoplifter's change of heart didn't come soon enough

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -

A woman who shoplifted a bottle of liquor tried unsuccessfully to avoid arrest by returning it before police arrived, officials said.

Jenny Vasquez Ellis left the Wine & Spirits store at 30 East 4th St., Bethlehem, with a stolen 750 milliliter bottle of Creme Yvette liqueur worth $29.99 at about 2 p.m. Friday, officials said.

Ellis was arrested by police in the 300 block of Adams Street, a block away from he store, after she had returned the stolen booze to the clerk who had reported the theft, officials said.

Ellis, 53, of 611 Broadway, Bethlehem, was arraigned on a retail theft charge and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $7,500 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. Nov. 18.
