BETHLEHEM TWP., Pa. -

A shoplifter who drove off with a young child and about a third of the food he stole from a store last month is now behind bars, officials said.

Kevin B. Haubois took off from the parking lot of the Giant at 3926 Nazareth Pike, Bethlehem Twp., Northampton Co., at 4 p.m. March 30, after loading about $100 worth of stolen food into a light blue 2005 Chrysler Town and Country minivan with a 4- or 5-year-old child inside, officials said.

Haubois was stopped from taking another $223.30 worth of stolen food products with him by Giant employee Brian Kish, said officials, adding that Haubois told Kish, "I do what I got to do to feed the family."

Police traced Haubois to his home at 602 North 6th St., Allentown, after learning the minivan was registered to Charlene R. Jackson, who lives at the same address, officials said.

Haubois, 32, was arraigned on charges of retail theft and driving with a suspended license and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $5,000 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. May 3.
