WYOMISSING, Pa. -

Police are asking for the public's help in tracking down a man who they said punched a security guard in the head and knocked her to the ground.

The assault, police said, took place at 4:15 p.m. Thursday as the man was leaving the Sears store at the Berkshire Mall in Wyomissing with a power washer that he didn't pay for.

"Upon confronting him in the parking lot, he refused to cooperate, at which point the security personnel took out a cell phone to photograph the subject and the vehicle he was riding in," said Chief Jeffrey Biehl, Wyomissing Police Dept. "Next thing you know, she recalls getting up off the ground."

The shoplifter punched the guard in the head with his fist, knocked her to the ground and took her phone, Biehl said.

The man left the stolen power washer behind as he got into a gold-colored minivan, possibly a Mazda MPV, and took off, police said.

"We do have some witnesses. We are talking to them, but we are hoping that somebody out there sees the photograph of the subject and calls us," said Biehl.

The shoplifter is described as a Latino man in his early 30s, standing between 5 feet, 4 inches and 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighing about 200 pounds.

Anyone with information that can help police identify the assailant is asked to contact the Wyomissing Police Department or Crime Alert Berks County at 877-373-9913.
