SAUCON VALLEY, Pa. -

Saucon Valley school district superintendent, Dr. Sandra Fellin, announced at a board meeting Tuesday that she will be retiring this July prior to the end of her term.

Fellin has been in the district for 11 years and has served as the superintendent for the past nine.

Her unexpected announcement drew an audible gasp from the stunned crowd in attendance at the district’s Audion auditorium.

The longtime public school employee began to well up as she made her announcement and discussed her time with the school.

“I said I wasn’t going to cry,” said Fellin in tears. “This is tough.”

“We’ve all had good times and bad but we’ve kept moving forward,” she said. “We’ve had a great 11 years.”

Although her contract does not terminate until December 31, 2015, Fellin later spoke of how the loss of others has made her realize her desire to step down and pursue other ventures.

“I’ve watched a number of superintendents pass on close to retirement age, good friends of mine. I’ve had relatives that have become extremely ill,” she said. “My life has been in education but at this point in time I’m choosing to spread my wings and do something else after my 35 years [in education].”

Board president Michael Karabin lauded Fellin’s devotion and service to the district over the past two decades. He later spoke about setting a timetable for seeking out a new superintendent to fill Fellin’s vacancy.

“We will be meeting shortly within the next week to start the process [of finding a replacement],” he said.

Upon ending her speech, Fellin received a rousing ovation from an appreciative audience in attendance.

“It’s been an honor,” she said.
