Route 611 bridge project starts in Pocono Township
Work has begun to repair the structurally deficient Route 611 bridge over Pocono Creek in Pocono Township, Monroe County.
The project involves repairing the beams and replacing the deck on the two-span, pre-stressed concrete adjacent box beam bridge.
Beginning Wednesday and continuing throughout the first phases of construction, the contractor will be shifting traffic lanes at the bridge.
The center turn lane will be eliminated and a single lane northbound and southbound will be maintained during the first phases.
Lane closures with flagging may be required when the new traffic patterns are implemented.
In a later phase of construction, Route 611 northbound traffic will be detoured between Rimrock Drive/Bartonsville Avenue and Bartonsville Avenue. The detour will utilize Bartonsville Avenue.
Local access will be maintained and southbound traffic will not be affected.
The bridge project is scheduled to be complete in September 2014.
Leeward Construction, Inc. of Honesdale, is the general contractor on the $2,489,984 project.
The Route 611 Bridge originally was constructed in 1957, according to a spokesman for the State Department of Transportation, which owns the bridge. It is 136 feet long and 52 feet wide and currently posted with a weight restriction of 17 tons, 22 for combinations.
After reconstruction the bridge will not be weight restricted.
That section of Route 611 has an average daily traffic volume of 19,380 vehicles.
