A Berks County man has been arrested and charged in the beating of his 89-year-old mother.
In the meantime, the victim was set to undergo surgery at Reading Hospital for bleeding on her brain, according to court documents released Monday.
Edna Shifflett arrived at the hospital by ambulance Friday evening.
"It initially came in as a fall victim. Once we interviewed the doctor and the individual, it was determined that she was actually assaulted," said Chief Mark Phillips, Robeson Twp. Police Dept.
Shifflett told a doctor treating her in the emergency room that her son, Charles W. Shifflett Jr., hit her several times in the head with a closed fist, according to the court documents.
Edna Shifflett suffered severe bruising on the left side of her head and bleeding on her brain, police said.
"What she did say was that her son was known to be violent and had an anger problem," said Phillips.
Police said the victim told them that she was arguing back and forth with her son when he began punching her so hard that it knocked her out of her chair.
"In a way, we are used to seeing these type of things, although we do not want to see them, but it is a concern when you have a son that assaults his mother to this extent," said Phillips, adding that investigators hope to interview the woman later this week to determine what led to the assault.
Charles Shifflett, 63, was charged with aggravated and simple assault and harassment. He was committed to the Berks County Jail on $100,000 bail.
