EASTON, Pa. -

After weeks of conjecture over the conflict a husband and wife team could pose to the Northampton County Courts, the legal drama officially ended Thursday night with the appointment of attorney Robert Eyer as public defender.

County Executive John Brown’s first choice for the nearly $58,000 job was Bob Sletvold, but questions about the efficacy of that move quickly arose given the fact that Sletvold's wife is a judge who hears cases involving the public defender’s office.

Some members of council pointed out that Sletvold's marriage to county Judge Jennifer Sletvold would create scheduling problems in the court, require the county court system to rearrange her workload to avoid any conflicts of interest in cases involving her husband.

Late last month, Brown said he was withdrawing Sletvold’s name for consideration and last night Brown asked Northampton County Council to confirm Eyer as public defender.

Eyer, a 1992 graduate of Dickinson School of Law, worked for the Easton law firm of Laub, Seidel, Cohen & Hof, after law school and later worked as an assistant district attorney in Northampton County, prosecuting drug cases and violent crime.

Recently, Eyer worked at the Palmer Township law firm of Steven N. Goudsouzian.
