A grandmother is recovering at home after being shot in the back outside her own home in Reading, Monday night.
Petra Cruz, 59, and grandmother of five, was standing in the 300 block of Bell Alley with her son when a heavyset masked man in dark clothing approached with a shotgun and opened fire, police said.
"They shoot me and I went down to the grass, and I was covering myself with boxes," Cruz said.
Cruz's son, Carlos, who also ran for cover during the attack, was not injured, but said he was disappointed by the crime.
"Well, it's kind of hard, but you know I'm trying to take care of her, as much as I can."
Cruz and her son were in the process of moving in to the apartment when the gunman opened fire.
This is the second shooting in this particular neighborhood in less than a month.
Police continue to investigate another shooting right around the corner at South 6th and Spruce streets on Aug. 10. At this point they have not found a connection between the two shootings.
"Anytime we have a cluster of violence like this, we're always going to take a look at all of them and see if there are any commonalities that link them," Kloc said. "At this point, we do not have a connection to that, but we will continue to investigate that."
Cruz says she moved to Reading from Manhattan because she thought Reading was quiet and safe place.
She now says, "No, it's not a quiet neighborhood, apparently."
She also added that she's not angry at her attacker.
"I think God gave me another chance," Cruz said.
Police ask anyone with information about either shooting to call Crime Alert Berks County at 877-373-9913.
A cash reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
