Police said they made an arrest just hours after a violent attack in Reading.
Alvin Washington attacked a woman with a machete as she was sleeping in the 1000 block of Marion Street, police said.
The woman suffered several deep cuts in the attack around 5:45 a.m. Saturday.
"I saw like scars on the back of her head and her back. I ran in the house because I was like scared, and petrified," said Anicia Molano, neighbor.
Neighbors say they opened their home to the victim, in hopes of preventing a violent confrontation.
"She would sit with me practically every day, literally crying," said Jen Carl, neighbor. "She was afraid."
"I warned her. I kept talking to her, you need to get away from him," said James Jones, neighbor. "You cannot allow this."
No word on the victim's condition.
Washington denies attacking the woman, according to court documents.
Police have charged Washington with attempted murder and assault.
