Police in Berks investigating string of bank robberies

Police in Berks County are investigating a string of bank robberies. Three banks were hit in just a matter of days, and police believe the holdups could be connected.
The robberies began last Mon., Feb. 10, at the First Niagara Bank in Amity Township when a white man in his early 20s, standing about six feet tall, passed the teller a note and took an undisclosed amount of money.
The following day, investigators said a man with a similar description attempted to rob the National Penn Bank at Saint Lawrence Avenue and Oley Turnpike Road in Exeter Township.
Fast forward to this week, on Wednesday there was another robbery at the Visions Federal Credit Union inside the Giant Food Store in Exeter Township.
"It is unusual. We have not had one for a while, but bank robberies tend to come in spurts. They are eventually caught," said Sgt. Ted Lis, Exeter Twp. Police Dept.
Investigators believe the three incidents are connected because the descriptions of the robber are similar, and in both robberies the man passed a note and claimed to have a gun but never showed one.
Investigators told 69 News they are combing through surveillance video of all the stores, trying to find out more information about the robber's identity.
"We have a lot of evidence to go through, a lot of video to go through and we have been getting a lot of tips from citizens, which we are sorting through all of those," said Lis.
Police urge the public to be on alert for anyone who looks suspicious and to call them if you have any information.
"We would like to stop them before it gets worse. So far, it has been money that can be replaced, so no one has gotten hurt and we would like to catch this person before anyone does," said Lis.
Police are also investigating a third bank robbery at the M&T Bank in Spring Township last Wednesday. They are unsure if it is related.
