Two people were killed and two others seriously injured after an SUV plowed head-on into a tree in Packer Twp., Carbon Co.
It happened around 4 a.m. Sunday on private property in a remote area near Dennison Road.
Officials believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Police said none of the four passengers in the vehicle were wearing seatbelts.
Officials said the driver, 47-year-old Richard Matsick of Nesquehoning, was speeding when he lost control and ran off the road.
Two passengers, 45-year-old Richard Zabroski and and 44-year-old Rebecca Pilla, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The other passenger, 45-year-old Julie Williams, sustained major injuries.
Emergency crews at the scene say the rescue effort was hindered by mountainous terrain.
Crews say the rescue operation took about two hours.
Crews say the victims may have remained trapped at the scene even longer if not for one of the injured survivors calling for help on a cell phone.
Police say the investigation is ongoing.
