An accident between a car and a bicycle left one person dead in Allentown on Thursday night.
The car and bike collided around 9 p.m. in the 1600 block of South Fourth Street, police said.
The coroner has identified the bicyclist as Scott B. Lambert, 44, a homeless man of Allentown. He died of multiple blunt force trauma, said the coroner, who ruled his death an accident.
The driver has not yet been named.
Witnesses said it was a terrible thing to watch, and a devastating scene that jolted people out of their ordinary routines.
"I heard the squealing of the tires and I saw the car hit the man on the bicycle. I saw the man fly into the air." said witness Deniel Andreoli.
"I came outside. I seen the guy laying on the ground and they already had him covered," said witness Joseph Kovacs.
Police tape and flood lights filled the 1600 block of South Fourth street in Allentown Thursday night.
Witnesses said the man on the bike had just bought tobacco at the gas station, but returned a few minutes later to buy more because he lost it.
According to witnesses, the man on the bike was trying to cross the street when he was hit.
Gas station clerk Matt Strouse said he ran outside after hearing the accident, and he spoke to the driver.
"His reaction was 'holy crap, I'm the one who hit him,'" said Strouse.
"I had mentioned to him that he was just over here and he had told us that he had cracked open a couple beers at home before he came back a second time and he asked me if I could stick around so I could tell the cops about that."
For the rest of the night, crash investigation crews took measurements, trying to find out exactly what happened.
"I just think it's a shame. It's really unfortunate. Accidents do happen and I think we have to be really careful," said Kovacs.
An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
There's no word if the driver will face charges.
