A fire call in Blandon turned out to be much more work for police than firefighters.
Northern Berks Regional police officers said they took a man and his wife into custody for operating a marijuana grow house.
Neighbors said there was a lot of commotion Tuesday afternoon as fire trucks, and then police cars, responded to 234 Cornerstone Dr., a home they said is normally quiet.
"They said it was the house was across the street and that there was a fire," said Marion Korner.
While firefighters responded to the call from an 11-year-old child inside the home, the firefighters called police in because of things they found.
Evidence seized from the home included at least 17 marijuana plants in pots, various fertilizers and soil, packaging materials, several lamps, four marijuana pipes and a scale, according to court documents.
Lorner watched from across the street as officers carried everything out.
"There were filters, pumps, big lights. It just didn't look like if they were growing it for themselves, it would have been that much stuff involved with the whole thing," said Korner. It is shocking, and it's right across the street. You worry about drugs and everything with your children. It's very shocking."
Korner said her neighbors were a quiet family of four -- mom, dad and two kids.
"Whatever happens, I guess they have to deal with it. Everybody's got to deal with it," said Korner. "It can happen anywhere."
James Keller, 35, and Angela Keller, 34, are facing several charges, including possession and manufacturing of a controlled substance. Both were committed to the Berks County Jail.
