A car chase through multiple municipalities ended with gunfire.
Police were dispatched to the Walmart in St. Clair, Schuylkill Co., for a possible theft.
An SUV had reportedly been driving erratically through the parking lot, police said.
It traveled north on Route 61 and onto Interstate 81, where officers caught up to it, police said.
The driver, now with police following closely behind, continued north, eventually exiting onto Route 54, police said.
Shortly after, they deployed spike strips in an attempt to stop the driver, police said. The plan slowed the man down but the chase didn't end. He backed his vehicle up and hit at least one police car and almost struck a trooper.
The driver took off again but eventually lost control of his vehicle on 853, police said.
He ended up in a ditch and as troopers approached his vehicle, he gunned the engine to get himself out of the ditch, police said.
At this point, one of the officers at the scene shot the man, State Police said.
He was flown to Geisinger Hospital in Danville, where he was last reported to be in critical condition, police said.
The man, who police described as being in his 60s, faces numerous charges, including aggravated assault, fleeing and eluding, recklessly endangering another person and related charges.
